XV International symposium
focus on innovations in diagnostics and treatment of glaucoma and comorbidities

About symposium

Dear colleagues, we invite you to take part in the XV International Webinar «Controversies in Glaucoma: a focus on innovations in diagnostics and treatment of glaucoma and comorbidities», which will be held on December 3, 2026 at 3 p.m. (Moscow time).

Recent decades have seen significant breakthroughs in the technological approaches to glaucoma—spanning diagnosis, treatment, and surgical techniques—driven by the rapid adoption of digital innovations and artificial intelligence across all fields of medicine. Coupled with the trend toward personalized care, these developments are transforming the entire paradigm of glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. We are only at the beginning of this journey. The aim of our symposium is to introduce physicians to these new advancements and invite them to join the discussion.

Leading international experts from Russia, China, Germany, Switzerland, Guatemala, and Hong Kong will participate in this year's symposium. The project author and coordinator is Prof. N.I. Kurysheva. The teleconference moderators are Prof. N.I. Kurysheva, Prof. I.L. Simakova, and Prof. S.Yu. Petrov.

Irina L. Simakova
Russia

Irina L. Simakova – Dr. of Med. Sci., Professor, Professor of the Ophthalmology Department named after Professor V.V. Volkov, the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov, full member of the Expert Council of the Russian Glaucoma Society, member of the dissertation council D 07.2.002.05, acting on the basis of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov. ORCID 0000-0001-8389-0421. I.L. Simakova – representative of the scientific school of Professor V.V. Volkov (1921-2019). The scientific focus of her professional activity is the early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. In addition, the range of scientific interests includes the development of new methods of computer perimetry and their improvement, the study of the diagnostic effectiveness of the most common methods of computer perimetry in the Russian Federation in combination with the morphometry of the optic nerve head in early diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma, issues of military medical expertise and related rare clinical cases of eye pathology. In 2003, I.L. Simakova together with scientists from the Department of Applied Mathematics of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, for the first time in Russia, a modification of a new technology of non-standard perimetry –perimetry with doubling of spatial frequency (Frequency Doubling Technology Perimetry) was developed in the form of a software product for cathode ray monitors. In 2022, as part of research work, the software version of this modification of the FDT perimetry for liquid crystal monitors was improved and adapted to the prototype of the first Russian portable automatic perimeter “Stimulus”, which was developed in 2018 by the domestic company “Total Vision”, which was a resident of the Skolkovo Foundation. The results showed the high efficiency of the advanced FDT perimetry program based on the Stimulus helmet perimeter in the early diagnosis of glaucoma, as well as their good coincidence with the data of the previous FDT perimetry modification.
